The Gettysburg Youth Soccer Club (GYSC) provides soccer training and playing opportunities for both boys and girls in the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and surrounding areas of south central Pennsylvania. The GYSC coaching staff includes professional trainers as well as qualified non-professional coaches – all with the aim towards providing amazing opportunities for kids to enjoy the “beautiful game.”
GYSC provides teams for both boys and girls from U9 through U16.
Effective January 2017, the grouping of players will change nationwide, with encouraged adoption of best practices in August of 2016. U.S. Soccer has mandated that all United States youth soccer programs go back to calendar birth years to align with international standards and Youth National Team programs.
Using the school calendar for age groups is practiced only in the United States and Canada; as all other FIFA members go by the calendar year.
Previously, age groups were determined based on players born between Aug. 1 and July 31. The change to calendar year age groups will reflect the calendar year, or Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. Players are still allowed to “play up” or play in an older age group.
US Youth Soccer and New York State West Youth Soccer will implement the best practice of calendar year age grouping for player registration beginning with the 2016-2017 soccer year for US Youth Soccer programs and competitions.
Determining Birth Year
US Soccer explains that birth year registration should be calculated based on the year in which the season ENDS. For example, if a season begin in the fall of 2018 and ends in the summer of 2019 (ex: 2018-2019 season), the players would be registered based on their age in the year 2019. Competitions that take place in a single year (ex: fall of 2019 only) should use that year to determine birth year. To simplify determining the age group, just subtract the birth year from the year the season ends.
Year Season Ends – Birth Year = Age Group:
2018-2019 – 2003 = U16
In some situations, players may play up an age group, but players cannot play down an age group. The GYSC Board and the GYSC Technical Director will determine whether a player should play up an age group.
Most GYSC teams play in the Central Pennsylvania Youth Soccer League (CPYSL). Each season, half the games are played in Gettysburg and the other half are played around south central Pennsylvania – usually within 45 – 60 minutes of Gettysburg.
Each GYSC team participates both in our Battlefield Blast tournament held in August and the Blue Gray Cup in May. Additional tournaments may be played on a team-by-team basis.
GYSC teams train at Gettysburg Senior High School and Straban Township Park located in Gettysburg. Other locations around Gettysburg, PA may also be used. In the Winter, GYSC uses indoor facilities in Gettysburg to train.
U11 – U16 home games are played at Gettysburg Senior High School. The address is 1130 Old Harrisburg Rd, Gettysburg, PA 17325. The game field is located adjacent to the varsity soccer field at the rear of the school.
U10 home games are played at Straban Park.
GYSC operates with a volunteer parent force. Head Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Team Managers, Committee and Board of Directors are mostly all parents of our players. We do occasionally recruit experienced soccer coaches as our teams progress in skill and level of play. Please consider volunteering soon.
